Somalia Republic's Recall of People's Republic of China Ambassador Infused with Tribalism?

By Aweis Issa

H.E.Mohamed Awil Letter
Letter provided with permission by Aweis Issa, 2010

This write-up is a follow-up from my 2010 trip to Somalia & Somaliland.

I have come across evidence - the above letter provided by H.E. Mohamed Awil - which shows how much tribalism and cronyism have become so important when selecting the real candidates for the Somali Embassies and other governmental staff.

Recently, I came to learn how the Somali ambassador to China, Mohamed Awil, is being treated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia. I have a copy of a letter written by Minister Yusuf Dheeg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Somali Republic, ordering the current Ambassador to China to hand over documents and Embassy property to Awale Ali Kulane, the newly appointed Ambassador to China.

As a Somali scholar and advocate for human rights, I see the Somali transitional government as based on tribal issues, which are mafia style interactions, removing the good staff members and replacing them with members of select tribes.

I am telling the international community that given this kind of injustice and undemocratic action, Somalia will not be able to change and democratize.
